European Air Source Heat Pump Market Sees Continued Growth

As the global demand for low-carbon technologies continues to rise, the European market for air source heat pumps is experiencing rapid growth. According to the latest market analysis report, the European air source heat pump market size exceeded $15.9 billion in 2023 and is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 18.6% from 2024 to 2032, reaching a market value of $76 billion by 2032.

Policy Support and Technological Innovations Drive Market Growth

Government support policies and financial incentive programs across European countries are further propelling the market's development. For instance, the Netherlands, which banned the use of gas boilers in new buildings in 2018, has turned to promote hybrid and electric heat pumps. Despite challenges such as supply shortages and rising electricity prices, government subsidies and incentive measures continue to drive the adoption of air source heat pumps. According to data from the European Heat Pump Association, Germany witnessed a record increase in heat pump demand in 2022, thanks to increased demand for energy-efficient air conditioning technologies, tax differences between electricity and natural gas, and private and public investments in space heating needs.

Residential Heat Pump Subsidies Across Europe

The European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) has compiled an overview of the latest subsidies for residential heat pumps in the EU, the UK, Norway, and Switzerland. Since the investment cost of low-carbon heating and cooling systems, such as heat pumps, remains higher than that of fossil fuel-based heating equipment, financial support programs remain necessary to eliminate investment barriers. For example, Austria offers subsidies of up to 20% of the price for air and ground source heat pumps installed in new buildings, with a maximum of €7,500. In France, the purchase of ground source heat pumps for existing properties is eligible for a subsidy of up to €15,000, and air source heat pumps up to €9,000.

Market Trends and Challenges

Although the market is growing rapidly, the high initial cost of air source heat pumps remains one of the main barriers to market growth. However, with technological advancements and product innovations, the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of air source heat pumps are improving, which will further drive market demand. By 2034, the sales of European air source heat pumps are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 7.9%, reaching $34.68 billion.
