European Air-to-Water Heat Pump Market Experiences Rapid Growth

Amidst the backdrop of energy transition and policy incentives, the European air-to-water heat pump market is witnessing swift expansion. According to the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA), since 2021, the sales of heat pumps in Europe have seen a significant increase, with 21 EU countries selling 2.18 million heat pumps in 2021, a year-on-year growth of 34%. Air source heat pumps accounted for the largest share of sales, at 89.6%. France, Italy, and Germany lead in demand within Europe, accounting for 51% of total sales.

Energy Security and Carbon Neutrality Goals Boost Heat Pump Penetration

In the context of global energy transformation, countries are actively positioning themselves in the heat pump market. By 2030, the European heat pump market size CAGR is expected to reach 26%, with cumulative sales exceeding 140 million units. China exports to Europe account for 48.7% of total sales volume, making it the main supplier to Europe. As European countries have successively formulated and promulgated clean energy policies, heat pumps are rapidly becoming the standard solution for new buildings. The EU plans to double the penetration rate of heat pumps within five years, with an expected cumulative installation of 10 million units; by 2030, the cumulative stock of heat pumps in the residential and service sectors will reach 41.5 million units.

Market Potential Huge, But Challenges Remain

Despite the huge market potential, the European heat pump market also faces some challenges. During 2023, heat pump sales experienced a decline, and the situation in 2024 remains pessimistic. High inflation, rising interest rates, and lower natural gas prices are factors contributing to the decline in heat pump sales. German heat pump sales in the first quarter of 2024 dropped by 52%, with a total of 46,000 units sold, compared to 96,500 units in the same period of 2023.

Investment Increases, Technological Innovation Continues

Despite the challenges, the European heat pump market continues to attract investment. According to EHPA data, between 2020 and 2030, at least €5 billion will be invested in the European heat pump market. Technological innovation is also ongoing, particularly in improving efficiency and reducing upfront costs. The EU is a technological leader, especially in the areas of cycle heat pumps and large-scale heat pumps.
